Rock The Boat

The English writer Arthur C. Clarke once said, “How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly Ocean.” Covering 140 million square miles or nearly 71% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is by far the greatest body on our planet. With a society focused on global warming, pollution, and the relentless spike in gas prices, this vast mysterious Ocean has been the elephant in the room for quite some time.

As individuals we view the Ocean as this immense and endless resource yet we neglect to see the larger picture. The world’s population is currently estimated at 6.91 billion by the United State Census Bureau. That’s a lot of mouths to feed! The oceans have been fished for thousands of years, however with today’s technology the extent of fishing has gone to new depths and the balance of oceanic life has been severely thrown off.

Every four years or so you get ambushed with campaigns pleading to Rock The Vote; we would like to challenge you to Rock The Boat. Significant change always starts at an individual level. The choices you make today could be the catalyst for worldwide reform that rescues our rapidly diminishing oceans.

The easy answer: Sustainable Seafood practices. By simply paying more attention to the seafood you purchase in stores and in restaurants, you can play a hand in improving the situation. The following link offered by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch outline which seafood to avoid, good choices, as well as sustainable alternatives.

Be the change our oceans need to recover from years of abuse and continue to feed the billions of people who call our great Earth home. For more information on what you can do to help, please visit the Seafood Watch website at www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.aspx?c=ln
